andI chose this book on reviewing reviews and had heard of EMP and discussed with my husband who knew of it, and was curious to its effects. I had no idea it would be as the book portrayed. So much has shown true where we are going as a nation and this could happen!The writer portrayed this in such a realistic light and he wrote it as fictional. Anyone who cares about us as a nation should read this. Mind you, sometimes hard to read, and yet.....I could not put it down! Finished it in a week! When you speak of ratings, I put what I felt, others could pick it differently......I am an avid reader of history, love love it. This isn't history.........yet. However, this book shows what if?????? Preparation for any catastrophe is something we should all do. The writer made it so real,,,,,,,what mankind can do to one another and what it takes to survive.
I hope to see a sequel from this, I really do!!!!!????? TV movie/mini series? Must read with an open mind, at the end, it doesn't end. yet shows hope......I loved this book, if you read it, you will see what I mean. Its a cannot put down.......Read and come to your own conclusion.

Great book!!! The author's subject matter expertise shined thru time and again. This is a refreshing departure from the countless fiction authors who can tell an interesting story but obviously lack the real world experience and thought process of a cop in a large urban area. Cops, especially big city cops, will love this book.
A very good account of what could happen in our society today. Frank LaFlamme captures the suspense & fear that we all would experience being faced with an EMP in our lives. I would highly recommend if for no other reason than to prepare for this impending possibility.
Greatly enjoyed this story - new aspect and details were refreshing.
Good book....but left me with questions at the end. Hopefully they will be addressed in a follow up book. I liked the three story lines the main characters struggles, his wife's struggles, and his works struggles, each playing out as the book progressed.
One mans struggles to find his ways home as the city he served slowly unravels into a chaos of anarchy and predation. The writer knows his stuff and it is clear he has done his research on the area he writes about the societal make up of the area and the culture of law enforcement.
This story is so realistic on what could happen in the area of LA, that one never thinks of the chaos that will occur. He should know, since he worked a field that put him close to the bad most days.
Great book, wish you would write more stories, from what you experience in your past field of work.
Finished reading EMP Los Angeles and it gripped me in a way which caused me to better prepare my home and family for any emergency. Coming from a law enforcement background I have worked with the kind of personalities and character of the Deputies that LaFlamme describes. What a roller coaster of events that is realistic and very factually based. I found myself determining what I would do given the circumstances taking place. The actions taken by the characters are suitable for the condition of what dictates the situations. As individuals we all have different ways to react but given the circumstances, I believe the actions taken were well formulated and inevitable. We would all like to save the world, but the inhabitants must be worthy of that sacrifice. This is a book that you can’t put down, as you are thrown into the story and hope you will survive the ending.
I just finished this book and I have to say I can't believe this is LaFlamme's first novel. Very well written, researched and incredibly authentic. I have been in law enforcement for 28 years and I can say LaFlamme brought out the best and worst that humanity has to offer in the truest form in this book. This novel clicks into high gear from the very start and never lets up. Very hard to put down. The heart wrenching decisions that some characters in this story have to make will really make everyone who reads it ask themselves, "Damn, what would I do?"
EMP Los Angeles is also a manual for preparation. LaFlamme's descriptions of prep methods were thorough but not exhausting. This book provided me both better methods for things I've already done as well as tons of things I've never thought of.
Can't wait for LaFlamme's next novel.
